2nd April 1915 (Good Friday)
Church service at 9.30 am. Dentist at 12 noon. Dinner at No.13 Stationary Hospital. Letter to Emily (posted 6am 3.4.15). Visit to old fort, Le Portel at 6 am with Cpl. Bageley. The tide was far out leaving a fine firm spread of sandy beach over which we walked to the rocks, amongst which stands the ruins of a very old fort. The star fish, Etoile de la Mer, were swarming amongst the rocks which were smothered with myriads of shell fish. A fine view of the town is obtained by and of the cliffs stretching between Cap d'Alprech and .... We clambered to the top of the fort, care being necessary to prevent a dangerous fall. Many women from Le Portel were collecting mussels.
