4th October 1914 (Sunday)
Operation order read out to the troops of No.1 Convalescent Camp on parade at 2pm. Order signed by Wilhelm issued from HQ at Aix-la-Chapelle on 19th August 1914:
"It is my Royal and Imperial Command that you concentrate your energies for the immediate present, on one single purpose and that is that you address all your skill and the valour of my soldiers, to exterminate first the treacherous English and to walk over General French's contemptible little Army."
The results of the order were the operations commencing with Mons and the advance of seemingly overwhelming masses against us. The answer of the British Army on the subject of of extermination has already been given. Three cheers were then called for by C. in St. Nazaire for those serving at the front, which naturally was responded to with enthusiasm.
Sergeant Major Henry Bangert of the Royal Army Medical Corps was posted to France as soon as WW1 started and kept a diary for the time that he was there until he was invalided out in Feb 1916. He wrote almost daily, recording his day to day activities, comments from newspapers and his work in field hospitals. He reported on the military acton that was taking place around him.
