2nd June 1915

Visit Le Portel at 6 am.  Glorious morning. It is difficult to imagine anything more picturesque than the scene presented to the view, as seen from the head of the jetty,  when the brown sailed fishing boats are leaving the sandy cove and sail to over the sunlit sea,  the glorious breeze bulging the sails as the boats pass the rocks covered with green seaweed, and further out, the ruins of the old sea fort.
This with the harbour of Boulogne and the cliffs as a background and the foreground the sand and the rocks, amidst which the quaint fisher folk so busy gathering mussels or shrimping and others collecting sand to take home to their neat cottages, form a picture full of life, charm and light.
