Sergeant Major Henry Bangert of the Royal Army Medical Corps was posted to France as soon as WW1 started and kept a diary for the time that he was there until he was invalided out in Feb 1916. He wrote almost daily, recording his day to day activities, comments from newspapers and his work in field hospitals. He reported on the military acton that was taking place around him.
Bright sunny morning. Belgians fly off. Splendid sight to see the machines glide gradually upward into the vivid sunlight.

French aviators at No. 9 post start off. Morning rather misty. Belgian aviators arrive from .... with a Maurice Farman.

French aeroplane alighted in field by No.9 Post at 4 pm, having set out from Paris, bombed Ostend and returned here.
German airmen bomb St Riquier.
Had a tune-up this evening with Cpl Lesage.
