24th August 1914

Roused at 2am.  Moved from school at 11.15am and saw town burnt down by Germans 1 hr after. Exciting battle between British and German biplanes.  Shots were exchanged but presently, after circling the Briton rose and got exactly over the German and fired downwards.  This happened over our heads.  The German turned and then outdistanced the Briton.  I heard subsequently that the French went after and brought down the German.
Arrived at VILLIERS POL at 7.30pm, moved off again at 9pm.  Arrived at park and bivouac at 12.40am,  VILLE BEAUPRAT.

  1. The biplanes must have been quite a spectacle, considering the first successful flight was only 11 years earlier, it was still very dangerous to fly and yet planes were already being used in a war.
Ville Beauprat is the first place mentioned so far that I can't find on a map.
